The Mages Guild

The Mages Guild is, by Royal Appointment, the guild to which all mages of Errin are entitled to belong. Its powers are prodigious, and were granted to the guild nearly eight-hundred years ago by the then King, His Majesty King Dunsaelys the Resolute.

By ancient and binding contract with King Dunsallys the Resolute, the Guild has certain irrefutable Freedoms that cannot be revoked. As justification for its freedoms, the Mages Guild has certain Obligations which it is required by the same ancient contract to fulfill.

Within the Guild

The organisation of the Mages Guild is subject to ancient tradition. The Guild is lead by the Synod, and headed by the Master of the Synod. Beneath these lofty positions in the Mages Guild are the nine Orders of Magic: mages of the Guild are members of one order and one only. Protecting them, and at the beck and call of the Guild's highest ranking mages, are the Guild Guard: highly trained warrior-wizards who act as bodyguards, escorts and - if ever the Guild is involved in direct conflict - soldiers.

There have historically been between eighty and eight-hundred mages with Guild Membership every year for the last five-hundred years: though war, freak ritual accidents, acts of the Gods and changes to reality itself have taken their toll on the number of active members in the Guild, its power has always been felt across the land of Errin.

Most of the mages in the Guild are not adventurers: they are ordinary practitioners of the elemental magics of varying levels of skill, honing their art within the safety of the Guild walls, and researching and expanding the ancient lore on magic. Many Guild mages have never cast a spell in anger - few have talent enough to learn their craft well enough to wield it in battle, and much of the magical power of the members is tied closely to the ancient books and artifacts which they work with each day. Only a small number of mages ever learn and use spells of the sixth level and above - and only an exhaulted few of those have talent enough to use their powers to aid a party of adventurers on some quest across Errin and beyond.

Entry into the Mages Guild is a right which can be claimed by all mages of Errin. Those with minor magical abilities, and demonstrable combat prowess, may be permitted to join the Guild Guard.

Notable members of the Mages Guild include:

Poleslider, Master Water Mage
Rhubarb, Master Water Mage
Marcus Board, Artisan of the Circle of Chains
Ash, Artisan of the Order of the Undying Flame
Geldor, Craftsman of the Brothers of the Tempest
Matrim, Craftsman of the Brothers of the Tempest and Master of Storms
Ithaqua, Novice of the Brothers of the Tempest

The Guild needs to update its records. If you are a member of the Mages Guild and not listed here, please contact our clerks as soon as possible.

ANNOUNCEMENT

Following the exit of Lord Ghar Narrek from this world, the Guild is considering applications from high level mages who are members of the Guild to fill the post of Master of the Synod. Any Artisan, Adept or Master mage who is a member of one of the major orders of magic will be considered by the Synod. Mages who are not yet of that rank but who expect to achieve it within the next two lunar cycles will also be considered.

This position will not confer Solonship of an order of magic, but the mage will head the Mages Guild, and be entitled to a seat on the Council of Twelve. Applications to be made to Master Oran Ghqall of the Order of the Undying Flame.
